The study “Transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems” was launched in partnership with IBP and ICS and developed by Catavento

The Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas (IBP) held its first pre-COP-30 event on April 2 in Rio de Janeiro, which was attended by industry leaders, authorities, and experts. On the occasion, there was the launch of the study “Transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems”. The document was drafted by the consulting firm Catavento in partnership with the IBP and the Climate and Society Institute (iCS) to contribute to a broader and more assertive debate on the actions and role of the O&G segment in the energy transition and decarbonization in the coming decades.

The president of the IBP, Roberto Ardenghy, considers COP30 to be a call to debate these issues. “We have the opportunity to pursue emissions reductions and strengthen our position on decarbonization, as well as generate resources to finance GHG reduction programs and the future replacement of fossil fuels,” says the executive.

According to him, oil and gas are currently responsible for 80% of the energy generated globally. “Energy evolution is a marathon: we need to prepare, find ways forward, and seek strategies. The transition cannot be a process of social imbalance – the 77 million richest people on the planet emit about 16% of GHG. We reject the idea that the oil and gas sector should not participate in public forums, because we have contributions to decarbonization and energy transition,” he concludes.

Regarding the study, Ardenghy comments that “Since the COP28 in Dubai, when our dialogue on the ‘Transitioning Away’ study began, our analysis has had an academic and well-founded profile to promote information for the necessary debate on global energy transition.”
Victoria Santos (ICS energy and industry manager) highlights her full support for the role of biofuels, in addition to more advanced fuels, and how we should expand this platform in the energy chain to support global decarbonization.

Alice Amorim (head of the COP30 special advisory team) noted that “this is the first of many inputs to come, so that we can begin to implement what was agreed at COP28 in Dubai.” She points out that the transition is not yet fully understood. “What scale do we need to achieve? There are several dimensions to the transition process, and we need to understand them in order to proceed in the best possible way,” she added.

A call for energy transition
Clarissa Lins, founding partner of Catavento, presented the study and said that major producers and emitters of greenhouse gases, such as the United States and Russia, are putting US$ 350 billion in assets at risk.

According to the executive, this is due to the risk that the economies of these nations could be severely impacted in a more carbon-restricted environment soon. This scenario generates, in particular, a possible change in the formulation of global public policies and is directly connected to access to domestic savings and global funds, which are essential for the financing of the transition and may be made more expensive in terms of credit by international rating agencies.

“In the study, we evaluated producers and consumers, which led us to the context of 11 countries in seven different regions of the planet, in order to have a balanced and robust sample of the global O&G market related to the energy transition,” says Clarissa. She argues that it is essential to understand supply and demand, in addition to the need for a five-dimensional analysis to understand all energy transition processes: the relevance of oil and gas production (how it contributes to each country’s export agenda, wealth, and GDP), competitiveness, energy security, emissions profile, and social resilience (how changes should be organized and promoted in the long term).

Decarbonization: a commitment by the private sector
Petrobras’ Executive Director of Exploration and Production (E&P), Sylvia Anjos, highlighted the country’s unique position on the global stage. “In Brazil, the energy sector (including transportation and others) accounts for 20% of emissions. When looking more specifically at oil and gas exploration and production, our industry accounts for only 2% of emissions,” the executive pointed out.

Flavio Rodrigues (Vice President of Corporate Relations and Sustainability at Shell) remarked that the company conducted an eight-month study in 2024 and concluded that greater synergy with the Paris Agreement resolutions is necessary. “Brazil could be a leader in the energy transition and be the first to achieve net zero by 2050. We have been discussing the impact of Artificial Intelligence in the coming years due to the increased demand for energy in this field of technology,” he said.

Andres Guevara (President of bp in Brazil) points out that the company is focused on low-carbon solutions — such as ethanol and SAF— that are aligned with the company’s oil operations in the decarbonization stage. “Brazil is a privileged country with very competitive pre-salt oil, renewables, and a clear policy to open up green technology alternatives through the Fuel of the Future program,” he says. Olivier Bahabanian (president of TotalEnergies) believes that we must decarbonize the oil and gas sector on a large scale and at a faster pace.

Viviana Coelho (executive manager of climate change at Petrobras) points out that oil is a commodity that will be present in the net-zero scenario for decades to come. “We must question how we should insert ourselves into the global energy chain and how we can analyze the energy evolution. We need data to assess this whole scenario,” she adds. Paulo Van der Ven (Director of Operations and Logistics at Equinor Brasil) argued that the transition journey must be deepened and aligned with the development of new green technologies and development paths for innovation in decarbonization.

Fernanda Scoponi (Renewable Business Development Manager at TotalEnergies) believes that the corporate portfolio will be more focused on sustainable energy and emphasized that Brazil has well-structured policies for oil production, providing legal certainty for long-term investments. Willian Nozak (executive manager of integrated energy transition management at Petrobras) remarked that the energy transition is a commitment at Petrobras. He recalled that Diesel R, a renewable fuel, has gained scale in the market. Nozak also mentioned that it is essential to model a carbon capture and storage (CCUS) system in dedicated onshore and offshore projects.

The analysis addresses criteria that should be adopted to define which countries are best prepared to begin shifting away from O&G production and consumption

Meeting the targets set out in climate agreements is a collective responsibility, and the oil and gas sector has contributed to this process by reducing its emissions through increasingly robust investments in innovation, technology, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and nature-based solutions. To assist the sector in making decisions aimed at accelerating this process, the study “Transitioning away from fossil fuels in energy systems” – conducted by the consulting firm Catavento in partnership with the IBP and the Climate and Society Institute (iCS) – will be launched on April 2, at the first preparatory event for COP-30, in Rio de Janeiro.

The study aims to help companies and governments define criteria and improve efforts that enable actions to ensure energy security and reduce emissions, in addition to providing society with reflections on how the oil and gas sector can contribute to a fair, balanced, and equitable energy transition.
“We want to show that we are also part of the solution to achieve emission reduction targets and discuss with all public and private actors the best way to conduct the transition process. One of the reflections brought up by the study is to reduce the supply of oil and gas simultaneously with demand to avoid economic, social, and to secure energy supply impacts. In that way, we will make an energy transition that is fair for everyone,” emphasized Roberto Ardenghy, president of the IBP.

Economic impacts
The survey evaluated eleven countries from seven different regions, considering five criteria categories to provide a broad overview of the oil and gas industry and its contribution to global development. One of the indicators that reinforces the relevance of O&G activity is its socioeconomic role. Between 2018 and 2022, for example, about 50% of the sector’s revenue (US$ 8.5 trillion) went to governments, mainly in the form of taxes.
The industry is also a major employer. In 2023 alone, employment in O&G supply reached 12.4 million people (18% of the energy sector), with 8.2 million in oil and 4.2 million in natural gas. In the same year, the oil and gas sector accounted for 51% of the global energy mix and around 60% of global electricity generation.

Decarbonization
The assessed scenarios also point to considerable demand for oil and gas, with their share in the global energy mix remaining at current levels over the coming decades. As a way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions during periods of high demand, the industry’s strategy is to invest increasingly in projects to improve energy efficiency in operations and implement large-scale carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. In this context, countries and companies that produce oil with lower carbon intensity, such as Brazil, will be better positioned in the global energy market.

ROG.e 2024, one of the world’s leading events in the energy sector, brings together more than 550 exhibiting companies this year, 230 of them in the Main Warehouse alone, where the Etnias wall is located. Of these, around 70 are IBP member companies. The booths, spread over 6 warehouses, reflect the trends and challenges of the energy transition, technology and sustainability in the sector.

In a fully interactive environment, visitors can learn about new projects, take part in presentations and establish strategic partnerships. The space is not just a technological showcase, but a meeting point for knowledge exchange and discussions about the future of the sector.

One of the highlights that generated a buzz in the hallways is a robot from China’s Supcon. The company, a partner of Huawei, has only been in Brazil for two weeks and made its debut at this edition of the event. It brought a dog-shaped model that allows supervision of an industrial unit, identifying leaks and abnormal problems that are occurring.

In addition, the company is launching the Universal Control System Heading to Infinite Control, a digital native DCS, integrating the operational level (OT) with information technology (IT), cloud and artificial intelligence applications. “Supcon’s participation at ROG.e is like the company’s debutante ball here in Brazil. The opportunity it gives us is to reach a very large target audience very quickly,” says João de Deus Fernandes, vice president of OTZ Engenharia, the company’s representative in Brazil.

Another newcomer to the exhibition is Dell. Although it is not new to the event, for the first time it has its own booth in partnership with Nvidia to showcase its artificial intelligence solutions for the energy, oil and gas sector. Having been in the Brazilian market for 25 years, the company, which has an artificial intelligence factory, brought platform mapping and the ability to deliver artificial intelligence cases, such as virtual training with AI glasses, making it possible to simulate situations on board.

Among the several initiatives that stand out in this edition, the launch of the book “A Wave of Women by Sea”, sponsored by BW Energy, is also one of the new features. The book is part of a cultural project supported by the Rouanet Act and brings to light the role of women and the female perspective on topics related to the sea. The publication – which is part of the “Decade of the Ocean” series, which addresses topics crucial to the sustainable future of the seas – offers a narrative about the importance of protecting and regenerating the oceans, highlighting the voices of professionals who have dedicated their careers to the cause.

ROG.e 2024 will be held until September 26, at the Olympic Boulevard in downtown Rio de Janeiro, and expects to welcome more than 70,000 people to its eight warehouses, which include a conference, expo and seven parallel events.

Oil and Gas sector will require USD 17.4 trillion in investments by 2050

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) launched the World Oil Outlook 2024 for the first time outside its headquarters (Vienna, Austria), at a special panel on Tuesday afternoon (24), during ROG.e, in Rio de Janeiro. According to the study, primary energy consumption will increase by 24% by 2050, driven by developing regions.

In this scenario, the oil and gas sector alone will require investments of USD 17.4 trillion by 2050 to meet the demand for oil, gas and other energies. “Our outlook aims to shed light on this issue to meet the growth in energy consumption. The world will need all types of energy. We must invest properly today, tomorrow and many decades into the future to see what each energy source can offer,” said OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al-Ghais.

The IBP President Roberto Ardenghy highlighted the historic moment that was Outlook launch at one of the world’s leading energy events, ROG.e, and the importance of the study for the sector, a reference for the energy market. On the occasion, IBP and OPEC signed a cooperation agreement to exchange information, databases and studies. “The purpose is to develop studies, exchange information, hold training sessions at OPEC headquarters and open up data sources between the organizations.”

Geopolitics in the energy world
On another agenda at the event, as a mediator on the Geopolitics of Energy panel, the IBP president said that geopolitical events affect our daily lives and the viability of long-term projects. “Anyone who does risk analysis needs the right tools. This discussion is crucial”.

Graham G. Henley, CEO of IOGP, the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers, explained how the institution seeks to help stabilize the gas market in the geopolitical context. “This year we have published over 100 technical documents that help show the interconnectedness of the energy supply market with geopolitics.

Carlos Pascual, president of S&P Global, brought up geopolitical aspects that directly affect the energy market. “In addition to traditional conflicts, we have a movement towards trade wars and tariffs. This is a reality that we must deal with. This scenario of a fragmented global order undermines confidence in long-term investments in infrastructure, for example.”

Thiago Barral, the MME’s national secretary for energy transition, reinforced the country’s position as a climate and energy transition leader. “Brazil has all it takes for this to happen, with advances in wind and solar energy, and the weight of bioenergy in our energy grid. Another positive factor is that Brazil is a major oil producer in the global market,” he said, pointing out that the combination of a leading role in the energy transition and oil production is an opportunity for the country to position itself and face uncertainties in the global market.”

Irregular market worries the lubricants sector
Alexandre Bassaneze, president of ICONIC, pointed out in a panel on the second day of ROG.e that 10% of the global lubricants market is out of specification. “When it is used in machinery or vehicles, it can damage the asset. Working on irregularities leads to high profits. A truck can have up to BRL 500,000 worth of synthetic and semi-synthetic lubricants and we’re seeing more and more thefts of trucks with these products”.

Carlo Faccio, director of the Combustível Legal Institute (ICL), analyzed that tax losses in the lubricants sector amount to BRL 1 billion and there are a further BRL 400 million in operating losses per year. ICL is working with the authorities and the private sector to find best practices and punish groups that promote unlawful acts in the sector.

Júlio Cesar Nishida, Superintendent at the ANP, says that more than 20,000 inspections are carried out every year. According to Nishida, around 191,000 liters of lubricants were seized between January and August 2024. “In many cases, there is a serious problem with false labeling, adulteration of the expiry date and origin of the purchase, which leads to low-quality lubricants reaching consumers,” he says.

Green hydrogen market
Ítalo Freitas, Eletrobras’ executive vice-president for commercialization and energy solutions, said during a debate at ROG.e that Brazil is ready to help decarbonize the global economy. According to the executive, the world has its eyes on the Brazilian electricity grid, which will give the country unique conditions to produce green hydrogen.

In this transition scenario, Eletrobras has the great advantage of being “one of the largest hydraulic generators in the world”, says Ítalo. Eletrobras currently has 43 GW of installed capacity, 98% of which comes from renewable sources with 24-hour production capacity, thanks to the large presence of hydroelectric generation in the company’s portfolio. For the executive, Brazil’s great potential for fuel production will allow the country to export green hydrogen or bring in production chains from other regions.

Young Summit
In the Young Summit program, a side event at ROG.e, the highlight was two panels focusing on the role of young people in the professional market. On the panel ‘The role of young professionals as drivers of cultural and organizational transformation’, Karen Couto, sector manager for Communication Management Support at Petrobras, stressed the importance of young people seeking allies who can defend their ideas and help shape them for the organizational environment.

Marcus Vinícius Mariath, from YPP, pointed out two common barriers: distrust of the quality of ideas coming from young people and leadership difficulties, especially when it comes to leading people of the same age or older. Karoline Rodrigues, from Halliburton, added that KPIs should be analyzed with a human approach, as they reflect people’s behaviors. According to her, leaders need to have the humility to learn from young people and recognize each individual’s potential.

On the panel “Is there still room for young talent in the oil & gas industry?”, Petrobras’ Recruitment and Selection Manager, Danilo Garbazza, said that the company intends to attract more and more young people, women, people with disabilities and black people. “That’s why we have increased our participation in contacts with universities and job fairs,” he said.

PRIO’s People and Performance Manager, Élida Gurgel, recalled the importance of the values of the institution and the employees being in harmony.

Energy and social mobility
At the end of the day, at the ROG.e conference, TV presenter and founder of Instituto Criar, Luciano Huck, highlighted the private sector’s capacity for transformation and innovation, including the oil, gas and other energy industries. “Success is the enemy of innovation. This industry will transform itself because this is a need for all of us,” he said.

Huck praised the private sector hand in hand with the third sector but warned that what actually changes the ‘inequality pointer’ is the government. “That’s why we need new leaders, who truly generate change for people, regardless of where they were born,” he said.

Also taking part in the panel were the president of Shell, Cristiano Pinto da Costa; the country manager of Petronas, Suhana Sudik; and the executive director of Corporate Affairs at Petrobras, Clarice Coppetti. The head of Social Impact at Galp Brasil, Cristiane Coelho, moderated the discussion.

At the opening session of one of the leading events in the sector, on Monday (23) in Rio de Janeiro, leaders have highlighted Brazil’s strategic position in the global energy landscape

ROG.e 2024 kicked off on Monday (23) showing the world that coexistence between different energy sources is a strategic path towards a just and sustainable energy transition. The IBP president, Roberto Ardenghy, praised ROG.e as a journey of knowledge, information exchange and deal-making, showing how the oil and gas and energy sector is committed to decarbonizing the economy.

“More than a quarter of the technical papers presented focus on decarbonization, sustainability, diversity and inclusion issues. We are important players in the process of energy evolution, which includes security, availability, plurality and inclusion.”

The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, highlighted the plurality of the Brazilian energy grid and the importance of the oil and gas sector for energy security and economic development. “Brazil is a world example with its diverse grid, we are examples in hydroelectricity, wind, solar, a storehouse of clean energies. In addition, our oil and gas industry is thriving and plural. We are recovering fields that were in decline and that’s why today we launched Potencializa E&P, to strengthen mature fields, generating jobs and income.”

Magda Chambriard, president of Petrobras, stressed the importance of exploration and production activities for replenishing reserves, as well as Brazil’s leading role in the energy transition process. “We are going to discuss oil projects safely and responsibly, to replenish reserves, working on the possibility of producing oil and gas off the coast of Amapá. Another important point is that, while the world aspires to reach 39% of the energy grid renewable by 2050, Brazil has already reached this goal and now aspires to reach 64%,” she said.

OPEC Secretary-General, Haitham Al-Ghais, also praised Brazil’s position at the forefront of the clean energy grid and confirmed the organization’s commitment to diversifying sources and energy security. “IBP’s work is vital for the advancement of the sector not only in Brazil but globally. OPEC supports all energy sources in a context that requires an understanding of three key points: energy security, fair accessibility and emission reduction.”

ANP General Director, Rodolfo Saboia, pointed out the strategic importance of the Brazilian oil and gas industry for the country and its importance in the energy transition process. “At COP 28 it was mentioned that the transition must take place in an organized way, coexisting with the different varieties of energy sources around the world. In this context, the country has a strategic position because it is a powerhouse that supplies different sources of energy.”

One example of investment in new energy sources is TotalEnergies. The company’s CEO, Patrick Pouyanné, stressed that the company’s mission is to produce more energy with fewer emissions. “We want to grow in the market for gas, electricity and other energy sources. We work with Petrobras to produce oil and gas, reducing carbon emissions with each project. As a clean and renewable source, wind energy is becoming an ally in reducing emissions and combating climate change,” said the executive at the Strategic Talks.

Non-obvious thinking

In his speech delivered to ROG.e delegates, Indian bestselling author and marketing strategist Rohit Bhargava pointed out that we are living in a multitasking world and that people get distracted very easily. “This is a big problem since it is ingrained in this generation and we need to find solutions to solve this deficit that can impact our knowledge of the present and the future,” said Bhargava, known for innovative ideas about the future of business and technology and author of the successful “Non-Obvious: How to Think Different, Curate Ideas & Predict the Future”.

Innovation

At the opening session of iUP Innovation Connections, a parallel event to ROG.e 2024, Maiza Pimenta Goulart, executive manager of the Petrobras Research Centre (CENPES), stressed the importance of the innovation ecosystem within the company, an area that will receive investments of BRL 3.6 billion in R&D, with projects that include decarbonization solutions and new energies.

The Petrobras manager also pointed out that, since 2019, the institution has been carrying out “Connections for Innovation”, a program that looks for solutions in the market for the corporation’s biggest challenges, through its Startups modules. Since then, contracts worth BRL 1.8 billion have been signed.

More than 1,000 people attended the opening of ROG.e alone, one of the world’s leading energy events, organized by the Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas (IBP), which will welcome more than 70,000 participants until Thursday (26) at the Olympic Boulevard in Rio de Janeiro.

About ROG.e

ROG.e is one of the world’s leading energy events. Organized by the IBP, it is expected to welcome more than 70,000 visitors from 65 different countries, including industry leaders, authorities, investors, academics and others. There will be 8 warehouses occupied with more than 550 exhibitors, 7 parallel events and the conference.
