The current global energy scenario is facing a challenge framed by climate changes and the perspective of increase in the production of renewable energy with wide access. For this reason, have a long term vision that allows the establishment of a sustainable energy model its crucial to the next generation future.

According to Roberto Schaeffer, associate professor of Energy Planning Program (COPPE/UFRJ. PPE/UFRJ) and Brazilian Congress on CO2 speaker, what sharpens the energy future it’s not the apocalyptical perception of the end of the oil age as happened in the 1970’s, but the concern with the climate changes. “The energy infrastructure is longstanding and pre-determines what must to be done in the short and middle term. That’s why Brazil must to know exactly what it wants to invest forthcoming”, added Roberto.

As stated by Roberto, this moment of energy transition, strengthened by Paris Agreement, signed by Brazil and more than 190 countries in 2015, present trends in the energy matrix changing, especially in transport sector.

“The fossil fuels and biofuels demand profile will be very different from what it is today. The global tendency is that oil will be designated to petrochemical, with a biofuel niche at sectors that can’t be easily electrified, and fuels, as kerosene, continuing be used at aviation, navigation and trucks”, disclose Roberto.

The 4th Brazilian Congress on CO2 in the Oil, Gas and Biofuels Industries, to be held June 28 and 29, in Rio de Janeiro, and has, as the main purpose, to promote and debate technical and scientific aspects associated to CO2 emissions, promoting the integration between Industry, Service Providers, Associations, Government Agencies, Research Centers, and Universities.

Among the confirmed speakers are Reive Barros dos Santos, The Energy Research Office (EPE) president; Aloísio Lopes Pereira de Melo, Ministry of Finance general coordinator for Environment and Climate Change; Aurélio Cesar Nogueira Amaral, ANP director; Rob Littel, Shell Global Solutions, general manager CO2 Abatement Technology; and Élbia Gannoun, Executive Chair of ABEEólica (the Brazilian Wind Energy Association).

The 4th Brazilian Congress on CO2 is sponsored by Petrobras, Shell, Equinor, Total and supported by Capes, CNPq e TN Petróleo magazine.

A topic on the Brazilian Congress on CO2 programme, a diversified matrix is the guarantee of energy supply

Brazil has a privileged position in the global energy scenario thanks to its diversified matrix with a solid predominance of renewable sources, classified as one of cleanest matrix in the world, what contributes for the reduction on CO2 emissions.

According to Elbia Gannoum, Executive Chair of ABEEólica (the Brazilian Wind Energy Association) and Brazilian Congress on CO2 speaker, the presence of wind energy at the matrix tends to grow due to being a non-CO2 emission source and it also has a low impact for setting up. In addition, wind energy has been seen as an answer to the matrix expansion need, considering that some renewable sources have limitations, such as hydro, for example.

Data from ABEEólica Annual Wind Energy Report 2017, shows the total avoided CO2 emissions in 2017 added up to 20.97 million tons, what demonstrates a developed sector with high power generation capability, growing vigorously, overpassing many countries.

However, fossil fuels will continue to keep its relevant spot because it is irreplaceable in some applications and, in others, it’s complementary. “It’s hard to imagine a 100% renewable electric or energy matrix. The fossil fuels will always have its value”, affirm Elbia.

The 4th Brazilian Congress on CO2 in the Oil, Gas and Biofuels Industries, was held between June 28 and 29, in Rio de Janeiro, with the main purpose of promote and debate technical and scientific aspects associated to CO2 emissions, promoting the integration between Industry, Service Providers, Associations, Government Agencies, Research Centers, and Universities.

Among the speakers were Fabiano Lobato, Equinor Head of Research & Technology Center Rio; Antonio Alberto Stuchi, Raizen Executive Director of Technologies and Projects; José Mauro, The Energy Research Office (EPE) director; Aloísio Lopes Pereira de Melo, Ministry of Finance general coordinator for Environment and Climate Change; e Aurélio Cesar Nogueira Amaral, ANP director.

The 4th Brazilian Congress on CO2 was sponsored by Petrobras, Shell, Equinor, Total and supported by Capes, CNPq e TN Petróleo magazine.

The organizing committee of the Brazilian Congress on CO2 has defined the highlights of its 4th edition, to be held on June 28 and 29, in Rio de Janeiro. Under the motto “CO2 and the Low Carbon Economy”, the conference intends to address one of the biggest challenges of the 21st century: meeting growing energy demands in a scenario with restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions. The registration for the event is open on the website.

This year, to ensure a more in-depth debate on the sustainability of the industry, the congress will expand discussion areas beyond technological features, including perspectives related to environmental and economic aspects. The committee selected topics that were directly aligned with current challenges – both Brazilian and global – for the development of the O&G sector in a low carbon economy.

For that reason, the event will bring, in its plenary, the global perspectives for CO2 and sustainability, addressing the status of CO2 emissions in the world, besides trends, risks and positioning of governments and institutions. The themes of the panels, on the other hand, include a Brazilian overview for emissions, the low carbon economy, as well as Capture, Conversion, Use and Storage technologies associated with carbon dioxide. A round table will also provide a debate on the role of the oil industry in the Brazilian energy transition.

The future of the oil and gas industry will be defined by climate policies and new energy offerings in the most different ways, which arise in a period of transition to a low-carbon economy. In this context, the Brazilian Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Institute (IBP) will hold the 4th Brazilian Congress on CO2 in June 2018, in Rio de Janeiro, with the goal of promoting and discussing technical and scientific aspects associated to CO2 in the industry.

“The Congress on CO2 wants to promote the integration between industries, service providers, associations, government agencies, research centers and universities,” Melissa Fernandez, Technology and Innovation Manager at IBP, says. “In a low-carbon economy, CO2 capture, transport and destination technologies play a central role, as they reduce environmental impacts of natural gas use on electric generation,” she adds.

One of the main challenges of the 21st century is meeting growing energy demand in this scenario of restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions. So, in the past few years, events about CO2 have been organized around the world, motivated by the necessity to discuss the reduction of this gas’ emissions.

To enrich and broaden the debate of the event, whose motto will be “CO2 and the Low Carbon Economy”, IBP is receiving technical papers related to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in the sector. Interested authors can submit their abstracts to the event’s website up to January 19 (Friday), through the Author’s Area.

The 4th Brazilian Congress on CO2 in the Oil, Gas and Biofuels Industries has the main objective of promoting and debating technical and scientific aspects associated to CO2 emissions, promoting the integration between Industry, Service Providers, Associations, Government Agencies, Research Centers, and Universities.

Meeting the increase of energetic demand in a restrictive scenario of greenhouse effect gas emissions is one the most challenging tasks of the 21st century. In recent times, events about CO2 have been organized throughout the world, motivated by the necessity to discuss the reduction of this gas’ emissions.

With this picture in mind, capture, transportation, and CO2 destination technologies play a central role on the reduction of environmental impacts of Natural Gas utilization as a fuel for electricity generation, when a transition for renewable energy and low carbon intensity sources is in place.

Be part of this debate by signing up for the congress.

In a world where about one billion people still do not have access to energy, natural gas will emerge as the main source for electricity in the coming years. That is the conclusion of the president of the International Gas Union (IGU), David Carroll. The executive is in Brazil to participate in the 15th International Gas Union Research Conference (IGRC) and spoke at the opening of the event, held this Wednesday, 24, at Riocentro, Rio de Janeiro.

According to Carroll, technology is key to develop the gas industry and to implement methods that increasingly reduce production costs. He mentioned eight key technologies that are being used in new business models around the world: Internet of Things (IoT); Robots; Augmented and Virtual Reality; 3D printing; Blockchain; Artificial Intelligence and the use of drones. “This is definitely a great opportunity for our industry”, he stressed.

According to the executive, the good moment that gas generation may experience is due to some factors. One is the abundance of this commodity in the world market, at lower prices. Another factor is the increased basis of intermittent renewable energy, which will keep demanding increased levels of flexible energy generation with natural gas.

Besides Carroll, other attendees of the opening of the IGRC were Frank Groeschl, Manager of Innovation and Technology at the German Technical and Scientific Association of Gas and Water; the president of the IGRC’s Organizing Committee in Brazil, Cynthia Silveira; and the secretary general of the Brazilian Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels Institute (IBP), Milton Costa Filho.

During his speech, IBP’s secretary general, Milton Costa Filho, highlighted the improvements in the business environment with the government’s recent announcement of the bid rounds schedule until 2019 and also spoke about the transformation experienced by the natural gas industry in Brazil. In recent years, the global market was affected not only by the drop of oil prices, but also by economic and political crises. In addition, Milton highlighted the impact of Petrobras’ asset sale program in the gas industry. “This will completely change the gas market in Brazil. The addition of new players will require a new set of rules that may encourage competitiveness in Brazil and ensure new investments in this industry”, he said.

Schedule – One of the most important technical events of the natural gas industry worldwide, IGRC is being held for the first time in Brazil. It will take place until Friday, May 26, at Riocentro. The Brazilian edition is organized by the IBP in partnership with the IGU.

The main theme of the 2017 edition is “Natural Gas: Catalyzing the Future”. In these three days, the event will address the strategic role of technology in the development of the gas market.

The program includes plenary sessions, presentation of technical papers in oral sessions and posters, as well as technical visits. In all, there will be twelve oral and five plenary sessions, which will discuss issues related to production and exploration, gas transportation, distribution, use of industrial gas and climate, environment, technology and innovation, among others.

The event´s speakers includes the main executives and specialists from the Brazilian gas market and also from countries such as France, Iran, Germany and the United States.

For the presentations, 415 technical papers from 27 countries were approved. Brazil, France, Iran and Russia were the countries that contributed with most papers. Gas transmission and distribution was the topic with the highest number of submissions, followed by exploration and production, climate and environment.
